An Embassy performs a variety of different roles; from offering advice and assistance to its nationals abroad, to issuing visas and providing a diplomatic presence for the home nation; its functions are huge and varied.
The new U.S. Embassy will need to contain space for the following activities and tasks to be undertaken:
- Public and representational spaces: a public space large enough to accommodate up to 350 is essential for the many representational and cultural events hosted by the Embassy.
- Consular Section: this department is divided into three sections: American citizen services, immigrant visas and non-immigrant visas. It is the area most frequently visited by the roughly 1100 people who come to the Embassy every day.
- Diplomatic and Governmental Departments: this is the business area of the Embassy which carries out various governmental functions on behalf of the U.S. Government.
- Embassy business and employee support: this department provides the staff of the approximately 70 sections housed in the Embassy with support, whilst also overseeing the day to day operation of the Embassy.
- Recreation and social areas for staff: recreational space and facilities are essential for the Embassy employees.
